DFFNY FOUNDER'S WELCOME
Welcome to the Sixth Edition of the Dominican Film Festival in New York!
The culture of our time is audiovisual and the media plays an essential part in contemporary societies. In this context, the Dominican Film Festival in New York was born from a Dominican vision and with the intention of offering a new cultural event for the New Yorkers. This sixth film festival offers a space for the discovery of an emerging cinema, to promote Dominican cinema and culture, to encourage new and established filmmakers, and to create a meeting point for lovers of the Seventh Art.
We all know that cinema is art and business but few know that the Dominican cinema is a growing industry in movement, in development, that is making headway little by little with firm steps. Its filmmakers, both in the country and the diaspora, are working hard to make Dominican cinema transcend internationally.
This is a popular and didactic festival whose contribution to the knowledge of cinema, education, culture, and art will become a key piece for the development of the work of New Yorkers. At the same time the dissemination and promotion of works that, because of their artistic significance and values, contribute to enrich and reaffirm Dominican cultural identity.
Enjoy the festival and diverse programming, and many thanks to all, sponsors, collaborators, volunteers, filmmakers, and all those who in one way or another have made this festival possible!
CREATIVE DIRECTOR'S WELCOME
With every passing year, we have so much more to celebrate!”
I am incredibly pleased to welcome you to what is undoubtedly our biggest edition of the festival, featuring the strongest curation of Dominican made cinema yet. This year marks 6 years of the Dominican Film Festival and it’s set to be a historic one with more than 75 screenings over the course of 6 days. This is possible because of the immense growth of the Dominican industry in the last few years and it is humbling to be afforded the opportunity to see and experience this growth over the past five years. For the first time we will be expanding the celebrations into midtown with screenings at the AMC Empire theater in Times Square. With this, we hope to not only reach out to a wider audience, but also to exhibit many of the films in actual movie theaters. Another big first for us is the introduction of the Audience Award, an added level of interactivity where you, the moviegoers, get to rate the films and select your favorite.
More than ever the Dominican community is making its lasting marks on New York City history and what better way than to do so by bringing everyone together around the celebration of arts, culture and cinema. Our slogan “Somos Más” (“We Are More”) is intended to elevate the idea of what Dominican culture is typically associated with, namely Plantains, Baseball and Bachata. Beyond the deliciousness of our cuisine, the exceptional success of our athletes and irresistible beats of the güira, Dominicans are emerging as a powerhouse of cinematic talent. From the compelling documentaries that go to the heart of Haitian-Dominican relations to the newly explored genres of directors and screenwriters, the industry is breaking ground in exploring new subjects and themes.
If we wish to continue advancing we need to head to the theaters and support our culture at the box office, it’s where it counts! It is our responsibility to ensure that we promote the festival and spread the word. This is our moment. Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you all at the festival!
