DFFNY FOUNDER'S WELCOME
Welcome to the Seventh Edition of the Dominican Film Festival in New York!
The culture of our time is audiovisual and the media plays an essential part in contemporary societies. In this context, the Dominican Film Festival in New York was born from a Dominican vision and with the intention of offering a new cultural event for the New Yorkers. This seventh film festival offers a space for the discovery of an emerging cinema, to promote Dominican cinema and culture, to encourage new and established filmmakers, and to create a meeting point for lovers of the Seventh Art.
We all know that cinema is art and business but few know that the Dominican cinema is a growing industry in movement, in development, that is making headway little by little with firm steps. Its filmmakers, both in the country and the diaspora, are working hard to make Dominican cinema transcend internationally.
This is a popular and didactic festival whose contribution to the knowledge of cinema, education, culture, and art will become a key piece for the development of the work of New Yorkers. At the same time the dissemination and promotion of works that, because of their artistic significance and values, contribute to enrich and reaffirm Dominican cultural identity.
Enjoy the festival and diverse programming, and many thanks to all, sponsors, collaborators, volunteers, filmmakers, and all those who in one way or another have made this festival possible!
CREATIVE DIRECTOR'S WELCOME
I am very excited to welcome you all to the seventh annual Dominican Film Festival in New York!
This year, the Dominican Film Festival is dedicated to Dominican women in film. We aim to highlight their talents, amazing works, and achievements within a heavily male-dominated industry.
This year’s slogan “El Cine Nos Une” (Cinema Unites Us) highlights the ways in which film and the filmmaking process bring us together. Specifically, how film unites those belonging to the Dominican diaspora with the rapidly growing film industry in the Dominican Republic and vise-versa.
There are seventeen official features competing in this year’s selection for our audience to vote on for our “Audience Choice Award.” Moreover, there are seven short showcases including an LGBTQ retrospective titled “Miradas Paralelas” (Parallel Glances), a short films competition titled “Women in Film,” and “Dominicans in the Diaspora”.
The creation of showcases like these provide our diverse filmmakers with a platform to share their work that gives visibility to their unique stories. I’m hopeful that you’ll enjoy our carefully curated 2018 New York City Dominican Film Festival programing and all the diversity of genres that it captures.
Our seven film festival venues include AMC Empire 25, The Armory Foundation, United Palace Theater, Comicionado Dominicano De Cultura, Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center, New York Times Building, and Viacom- Viacom Lodge.
I would like to thank you all in advance for supporting the Dominican Film Festival in NYC and the ongoing growth, talent, and development of our Dominican film industry.
