Dominican Filmmakers in the diaspora: A different point of view
By Maite Bonilla, Wigner Duarte, Christopher James Lopez, Ray Hungria & Soleidy Mendez
Immersed in a different reality from the Quisqueyano filmmakers who work in the Dominican Republic, the showcase “Dominican Filmmakers in the Diaspora” takes as its focus those Dominicans who choose to make movies and tell their stories away from home. Rather than a political analysis of Dominican immigration, this program explores the new filmmaking movement taking place within the Dominican diaspora. It highlights rich and peculiar images of another world, navigated by the voices and stories of Dominican immigrants, who bring a multi-layered approach to a variety of themes that ultimately display the effort of their adjustments into a new reality. In the scope of minutes, the lives of a heterogeneous group, their dreams and their frustrations within a social dynamic of integration is portrayed through the different lenses of each filmmaker.
